StandOutWA values acceptance and understanding of the broad spectrum of sexuality and gender identity. Above all, we value diversity and positivity. We strive to achieve a community that celebrates difference, and that supports and listens to LGBTQI young people in Western Australia.
“
MISSION
StandOutWA seeks to combat and lessen ignorance-driven homophobia and transphobia, as well as its effects, by creating GSAs in schools that lack Safe Schools teaching, creating safe online communities, and developing educational resources. We are sustained and organised by students and young volunteers in the pursuit of safety, equality, acceptance and better mental health in our communities.

61% of LGBTQI young people report having experienced homophobic or transphobic verbal abuse.

80% of these LGBTQI young people have reported abuse experienced at school.
WHY
Discrimination affects academic performance, mental health and future career prospects, and is a large reason for the marginalisation and disadvantage still faced by LGBTQI people. Environments of homophobia in schools also encourage implicitly discriminatory attitudes in students as a whole, and reinforces a societal psyche that regards LGBTQI people as abnormal.
WHAT WE'VE DONE

In 2018, StandOut engaged in the wider community to promote awareness and education.

For more on what we've done, check out our projects page!
Last November, we hosted a stall and distributed Headspace, Inclusive Education and WA Police resources at the Kambarang Festival, a youth festival designed to facilitate reconciliation with Aboriginal Australians!
